Cubism first came to prominence in the early 1900s through the work of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Most of us are familiar with the word “Picasso”, and it is usually used when describing a fine piece of art or an artist. Picasso is most famous for revolutionizing the art world with Cubism. This new art form that he helped introduce was heavily influenced by African tradition as Picasso’s friend showed him a mask from the Dan region of Africa. African masks are used for various reasons in our culture from representing ancestors to celebrating weddings and other ceremonies. Picasso said it best with one of his quotes, "bad artists copy, great artists steal", and Picasso stole "Cubism" from Africa! Our ProtoCubism shirt was created to bring to light the influence that our ancestors had on the art world. We hope you enjoyed learning about this unit, now purchase your ProtoCubism apparel today!
