Cubism first came to prominence in the early 1900s through the work of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Most of us are familiar with the word “Picasso”, and it is usually used when describing a fine piece of art or an artist. Picasso is most famous for revolutionizing the art world with cubism. This new art form that he helped introduce was heavily influenced by African tradition as Picasso’s friend showed him a mask from the Dan region of Africa. African masks are used for various reasons in African culture from representing ancestors to celebrating weddings and other ceremonies. Our ProtoCubism merchandise was created to bring to light the influence that our ancestors had on the art world as the mask on this design is the style of mask from the Dan region. We hope you like the design and what it represents.
